Earlier this fall, Harvard hired an atheist as president of chaplains named Greg Epstein. Epstein told the New York Times “We don’t look to a god for answers,” Epstein told the paper. “We are each other’s answers.” That an atheist can become head of the Harvard chaplains shows just how far our elite universities have fallen. I strongly disagree with this humanist world view Epstein and many others today, especially in academia, profess. It stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of hierarchy, improper elevation of ethic over cosmology, and a misunderstanding of man's relationship with God. What is the point of Christianity if you are not looking to God for answers? The world is incredibly complex and variable. The Bible serves as a road map to navigate ever changing circumstances by presenting archetypal patterns that can inform decision making. You don't just read Bible stories. You live within them and the patterns they reveal.
God made a covenant with Abraham, so Epstein is justified if the point he is trying to make is that human's have agency and a responsibility to act in the world. Covenants are a two way street. If you see someone drowning you should help yourself or call 9-11. You shouldn't pray for rescue. You should participate in the rescue. But I don't think that is entirely what Epstein means. I think he is walking the dangerous tightrope of Ivan Karamazov in asserting that man can create his own ethic and that ethics are supreme. A large portion of the Bible is devoted to warning of the dangers of idolatry, false worship, false direction, false attention. Generally, we are not told if idol worshipers are bad people. Their primary sin is idol worship. They may in fact be well intention-ed people. However, if your values are not arranged in a hierarchy with God at the top, the train will run off the tracks. It's why social justice warriors generally make the situation worse.
Humans have agency. We are called to be tillers of the soil and to aid in the ordering of creation. However, that does not make us God and it is quite dangerous to think it does. Eliminating God from the value hierarchy like Epstein does will create a lack of direction and priority and will eventually lead to quite evil behavior. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/09/20/harvards-atheist-chaplain-controversy
In this video I parallel the toxic ideas expressed in the Barbie movie to Pharaoh's injunction to the Hebrew midwives to kill all male children born of Hebrew women as a means of subjugating the Israelites and preventing them from rising up. this is the deep state's same plan just by different means with the American people.
